CMM maturity level 3 requires an organization to have a defined set of standard processes and institutionalization across its processes. Every level of CMM has some process areas that need to be institutionalized in order to achieve that particular maturity level. To acquire any maturity level, process areas falling under that level as well as the process areas that fall under the level below need to be fulfilled. There are 18 process areas, which must be fulfilled by an organization in order to obtain CMM level 3. All of these fall under different categories, such as:

Processes that come under this category are organizational process focus, organization process definition, organizational training, organizational process performance, organization innovation and deployment.
Project management processes
The processes under this category cover project management activities related to planning, monitoring and controlling of projects. Processes supporting this category are project planning, project monitoring and control, supplier agreement management, integrated project management, risk management and quantitative project management.
Engineering processes span development and maintenance activities that are shared across engineering disciplines. The processes that come under this category comprise requirements development, requirements management, technical solution, product integration, verification and validation.
These processes act as support in development and maintenance. Processes belonging to this category are configuration management, process and product quality assurance, measurement and analysis, decision analysis and resolution and causal analysis and resolution.
